Thing-a-Day Jan 23 #2 - Work Rant Monday

I've had a lot of interesting jobs since I was 17. From hospitality and food-service to being an executive's driver and bodyguard. I've worked in hotels, banks, slaughterhouses, fulfillment centers, casinos, brothels, and state offices. At one time, I had a job that saw me commuting all over Nevada from Fallon [home at the time], to places like Lone Pine, Jackpot, Rachel, Elko, Las Vegas, and even Bishop, CA!

I'd have to say, though, that my most interesting job had to be when I was a security guard. One night, I was on-site patrol for a construction site in West Reno, and the next, I was in Hawthorne as a Gate Guard for a music festival! There was one post that I'll never forget, though.

It was central Reno at the public transportation hub. Nice little place on 4th and Lake if you're interested in looking it up or going there! However, I was posted there in the middle of winter, and the local homeless population at the time were a lot more aggressive than they are currently in Reno. The night before, one of my co-workers was stabbed in the shoulder by one particular hobo and hospitalized. The hobo wasn't caught because the others ran interference for him. So, when I was given the assignment, Command issued me a stab-resistant vest with shoulder armor and told me that "wearing a tie was optional." Screw it, I thought, I want to look professional! I arrived at midnight and saw some vagrants setting up their tarp tent in the southeast corner of the block. When I approached, one vagrant started walking toward me wielding a small blade. I told him to stop, but he kept bearing down, so I whipped out my taser and deployed it. Guy went down like a sack of shit, and the other vagrants immediately started packing up their stuff and moving it off-location.

While calling in the incident to Command [and local police], the guy got back up and lunched at me. Rookie mistake on my part. I should have zip-tied him before anything else, but hey... I was kinda new to this particular aspect. Sure enough, I felt pressure on the backside of my left shoulder and heard a snap. Cheap-ass knives, man. Instincts kicked in and I swept my right leg back to decentralize the guy. He went down again, and I immediately rolled him on his stomach and detained him.

The next night, Command sent me to an upscale neighborhood to secure a downed wire while construction crews repaired part of a flood-damaged road.

Yep... quite a chaotic one.
