Throwback Repost - "It's a [REDACTED] Life"
I wanted to re-post a Holiday Season entry from my former blog that kinda defines this Holiday Season as well.
OP Date: 12/16/21
So, as many of you are aware, I generally despise the Holiday Season. It's not because of the friends and family, feasts, gift-giving, and other festivities, though. No, my disdain is based on three factors:
Consumerism
Religious Theft
Forced False-Nature
Consumerism
Now, the first one is quite easy to explain; we've allowed ourselves to become slaves to the dollar, and the corporations have used that voluntary slavery to make the traditional Holiday festivities revolve around shopping at your local WallMarket, getting the foodstuffs at your local Smurf's or Relay's, and decorating your tree with baubles from Starschmuck's or Dippin' Dingleberries.
I prefer to make gifts, honestly, but people don't seem to appreciate that traditional aspect of the Holidays anymore.
Religious Theft
We all know that the Holidays originated from Pagan feast days, right? Well, oddly enough, the vast majority of people are shocked to find this out!
Most people don't know the original purpose for a Yule log, or why one would hang a green wreath on the front entrance of their home. Hells, some of the original meanings are built right in to the current festivities, yet people still gloss over these meanings because something something Baby Jesus something. Just look at jolly ol' Saint Nick! Seriously, look it up for yourself, I ain't doing this right now.
My home celebrates Saturnalia and Yuletide. That's about all I really need to say.
Forced False-Nature
If you know me, you know that I'm not a very outgoing person. It's not that I'm an overt dickhead or anything1, but I'm just introverted. Other people, though… man I know too many spiteful, hateful assholes who, when December rolls around, put on the fakest façade you'd ever seen and pretend to be everyone's friend!
I'm lookin' at you, Gary! ~wink~
Even I have to don this mask of outward extrovertedness2 during the season because I don't want to ruin it for anyone else. Especially around kids, ya know? There've been a few years where I'd dress up in a Santa costume and visit my relatives just to keep the illusion alive for my nieces, nephews and so on.
Yeah, the issue with this last one is this; when I put my False-Nature mask on, it's a choice. A choice that brings joy to others, and therefore serves to provide me with Holiday CheerTM.
Bonus Round
Lately, society has become much more politicized. This is permeating everything, much to the chagrin of people like me who just want to get along in life without having to contort ourselves into these notions of what other people want us to be.
Look at the news. LOOK AT IT! See how everyone's being a miserable bastard because "Biden said this", "Trump tweeted", "I don't wanna get vaxxed", "Fuck masks", "Fuck anti-vaxxers", "Fuck anti-maskers", "Look at this retarded conspiracy theory we're presenting as fact3".
Conclusion
Seriously, Xmas should be about spending time with your family and friends, not being a miserable bastard, shopping at your local WalFart, forcing yourself to be someone you're not, or spreading your religion.
More ranting coming up, because I'm an angry little Reverend this Holiday Season.
Footnotes
1. As far as I know, at least…
2. That is so not a fucking word…
