Upcoming Project...

 This should be interesting.

As many of you know, I've been a Game/Dungeon Master since about 1996 and love to create story-based campaigns over dungeon crawls. For the past five years, my Guild has played through various campaigns using D&D5e, Pathfinder 1e, SPECIAL [FALLOUT], UESRPG, and a handful of experimental and OSR systems. However, our greatest challenge lies ahead... playing a campaign in GURPS 3e.

I've not used GURPS since the first edition, but I remember it being quite robust while maintaining such a generic nature that one could put the system into anything and make it work. This campaign is based on the GURPS: Illuminati! source, by the way, and that's why we're not running it in 4e [the current one].

My Guild Members are used to running fantasy, sci-fi, cyberpunk, and whatnot, but they've not yet played in a hyped-up modern setting before. So, let me break down the scenario:

I gave the players three options for the year they start their campaign; 2007, 2012, and 2020. They chose 2012 and told me that the 12/21/12 conspiracy would be more interesting to them than Scientology vs The Interwebs [2007] or Aliens/no-wait-COVID [2020], and I can completely agree with them. As far as conspiracy theories are concerned, the 2012 End of the World theory was the single-most pervasive conspiracy theory that they lived through [their ages range from 21 to 28].

With their choice comes, honestly, quite a lot of options for me to get creative with the presentation and how I tell the story externally! Now, what I mean by telling the story externally is that we plan on writing out the recapped sessions as a blog... potentially using other forms of media for added immersion. Internally, this opens me up to creating caches of miniature sites and other media for the players in the campaign itself! For example, Joseph is looking for evidence of the Bat-Boy and comes across a blog post that references an article published in the Weekly World News on 06/25/2007 that indicates Bat-Boy was contracted by the CIA to travel to Iran and bite Saddam Hussein [yes, this is a real fucking article -- no, I'm not fucking kidding].

The story-blog is probably going to be written from the first-person perspective of an NPC that is either close to the PCs or is part of the Conspiracy and has been contracted to shadow the PCs. Not sure what the more interesting perspective is going to be. If you have any suggestions, reader, please leave a comment
